The Temple of Olympian Zeus, one of the largest in antiquity, began to be built around 515 BC. According to Aristotle, its construction by the Peisistratids served the purposes of tyranny, “an annoyance and a burden to the rulers.” It was completed by the Roman emperor Hadrian in 131-132 AD, “as a great struggle of time,” as Philostratus reports.
